Throughout 2018 and into early 2019, several of Gleeds’ offices around the UK are supporting local schools and colleges by sharing their time and skills through a combination of ongoing partnerships as part of Class of Your Own’s ‘Adopt a School’ programme, and at one-day workshops, fully facilitated by Class of Your Own.
The workshops, geared to suit secondary school students, introduce the fundamentals of coordinating a community construction project. Gleeds staff will be working with students, helping them to understand the processes involved in a construction project and the wide variety of professional career options available, from becoming building surveyors to project managers.
Ken Reid, Main Board Director, Gleeds, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Class of Your Own. The work that they do to champion careers in construction is vital to our industry and has supported so many children to carve a positive career path.
At a time when there is a skills shortage in the UK’s construction industry, it has never been more important to raise awareness of the huge variety of options available in the sector, suited to a wide range of skills.
At Gleeds, we are committed to offering young people access to skills and expertise that can help them get ready for the world of work and consider construction as a career pathway.”
Alison Watson, Director and Founder, Class of Your Own, said: “Through the support of companies like Gleeds, we are able to offer children in local schools across the UK the opportunity to learn first-hand from experienced professionals in the construction sector.
We are thrilled that some of Gleeds’ offices have joined our ‘Adopt a School’ programme, so that they can provide longer-term, sustained practical and financial support to schools, helping students to learn specific construction sector skills.
I do hope that other organisations will be inspired to follow suite and see the genuine value this brings, especially in developing a dedicated digital talent pipeline.”
